Who will win the 2011 NFL MVP?

It seems that most pundits agree that this Aaron Rodgers award to win. He’s on record setting paces and has been extremely efficient. Also, at the time of writing this, the Packers have been virtually untouchable. They haven’t even had a close game in the 3rd quarter. Before we get carried away, let’s look at who could take the prize from him.

1. Drew Brees

Drew is on pace to shatter Dan Marino’s single season yards mark. The Saints have been the second best team in the NFL. If you take Aaron Rodgers off of the Packers, they’ve got enough weapons that they’re probably still a playoff team. If you take Brees off of the Saints, they’re not winning anything. That is the definition of valuable. In any other season, we’re probably talking about how unreal this guy’s numbers really are.

2. Tom Brady

How exactly did Tom Brady become the forgotten man in all this? Brady is the Patriots. They have an awful defense, an okay run game, and yet they keep on winning. No one is more responsible for their success than terrific Tom. When you remember that the award goes to the most individually valuable to their team, it’s hard to argue that anyone means more to their team’s success than Tom Brady. You can add in the fact that Tom’s WRs are nowhere close to Green Bay’s. Then you throw in how awesome Tom’s hair is and that could spell a winner.

3. Peyton Manning

Okay he hasn’t played and obviously that discredits him from actually winning the award. However, in principle, it’s hard to ignore what Peyton’s absence has meant to the Colts. They are a perennial playoff team year in and year out with him at the helm. Without Peyton, they may not win a game. They’re a sure lock to win the Andrew Luck sweepstakes. It that doesn’t make you “valuable”, I don’t know what does.

4. Aaron Rodgers

Barring an absolutely epic collapse, Aaron Rodgers is going to win the 2011 NFL MVP award. The real question is, should he? He’s been unreal so far to this point in the season. All the stats certainly support his stance. The only knock against Rodgers is the team around him. The award is supposed to go to the most valuable player to their team. Can anybody really make the case that the superbowl champion Green Packers need Aaron Rodgers to win? Probably not.
